Payments & Transfers Directory
Moving money domestically is largely a solved problem — most P2P apps are free and instant for basic transfers. The friction and the fees show up at the edges: sending money internationally, processing payments as a business, and understanding who's actually protected when a transaction goes wrong.
What to look for
- 1.Domestic vs. international transfer support — Most consumer P2P apps (Venmo, Zelle, Cash App) only work within the U.S. For international transfers, you need a dedicated service. Bank wire transfers are usually the most expensive option; purpose-built remittance platforms typically offer significantly better exchange rates and lower fees.
- 2.Fee structure: flat fee vs. percentage vs. exchange rate markup — International services often advertise "no fees" while embedding profit into a currency conversion markup of 1–4%. Compare the total amount received on the other end, not just the stated transfer fee.
- 3.Settlement speed — Some services are instant; others take 1–5 business days depending on method and destination. For time-sensitive payments, confirm the settlement timeline before relying on a service.
- 4.Buyer and seller protection policies — P2P apps treat person-to-person transfers differently from goods/services transactions. Sending money via "friends & family" on many platforms waives all buyer protection. Understand what recourse you have before a dispute happens.
Most common mistake
Using a bank wire transfer for international payments without comparing alternatives. Bank wires typically charge $25–$50 in flat fees plus an exchange rate markup of 3–5%. On a $2,000 international transfer, a dedicated remittance service often saves $80–$150 in total costs compared to a standard bank wire.
